Sunday of Orthodoxy

The first Sunday of Great Lent every year commemorates the restoration of icons in the Churches in the year 847 after almost a century of controversy over their use in prayer and worship. Finally, the true teaching that the Word of God truly became flesh and blood in the person of Jesus Christ and it was therefore not idolatry to paint and honor his physical image prevailed. To this day in the Church, icons continue to add beauty to our worship and help us to raise our minds from earth to heaven.
